Introduction to
Human Factors
and Performance
Human Factors
and Performance
(also called
ergonomics) has
roots stemming
from
engineering,
psychology,
physiology, and
pedagogy.
Military and
industrial
designers
recognized more
than 60 years
ago that purely
empirical
approaches of
selecting and
training
operators and
maintenance
personnel did
not ensure
acceptable or
safe system
performance.
Recognition of
this problem led
to development
of a body of
knowledge and
skills about
human
capabilities and
limitations, and
eventually this
body of
knowledge and
skills expanded
to include
equipment and
design.
In litigation
disputes and
insurance
claims, human
factors and
performance
professionals
serve to ensure
that there is
unbiased and
authoritative
insight into the
contributions to
accidents and
product failures
from design
procedures,
operator and
user training,
instruction
manuals, warning
signs, and
operator and
user perception,
capabilities,
behavior, and
limitations.
In industry,
human factors
and performance
professionals
serve to ensure
that systems and
equipment are
designed to be
compatible with
known human
biomechanical,
physiological,
information
processing, and
anthropometric
characteristics.
ITC Experts
offers human
factors and
performance
expert
consulting to
legal dispute
resolution
relative to
accidents and
product
failures, to
insurance claims
investigations,
and to industry.
Human factors
and performance
expert
consulting is
offered in all
areas considered
to be part of
this discipline,
including
aviation
accidents,
consumer product
accidents and
failures
(recreations
vehicles,
fitness
equipment and
facilities, and
automobiles
accidents to
name a few),
usage of
facilities
(restaurants,
fitness
facilities,
retail
facilities to
name a few),
construction
site safety, and
industrial
safety.
