Anthropometry
Static
anthropometry is
the science
dealing with
measurements of
the size,
weight, and
proportions of
the human body.
Functional
anthropometry
deals with
dynamic
capabilities
related to the
body such as
reach envelopes,
lifting
capabilities,
walking/running
speeds, and a
wide variety of
other factors.
In many cases, a
thorough
knowledge of
anthropometry is
a key factor in
understanding
how an accident
could or could
not have
happened. For
example, it is
normally
impossible to
simply lean
against an
object and fall
over it unless
the center of
mass of the body
is higher than
the object in
question. Other
examples dealing
with
anthropometric
considerations,
might involve
the
acceptability of
the level of
force or
strength
required to use
a product, or
the capability
of an individual
to have reached
into or accessed
a particular
location.
